GS1 UK announces Lord Prior as keynote speaker at its annual healthcare conference in 2016
Conference will set out how GS1 standards are helping the NHS save thousands of lives and millions of pounds
London, 30 September 2015 – GS1 UK proudly announces that Lord Prior, Parliamentary Under Secretary of State for NHS Productivity, is the keynote speaker of the GS1 UK Annual Healthcare Conference 2016. The conference will take place on 12 and 13 April 2016 at the Radisson Blu Edwardian Heathrow Hotel, one of Europe's largest conference centres.
Lord Prior of Brampton was appointed Minister for NHS Productivity and a member of the House of Lords in May 2015. He has had a longstanding career in healthcare outside politics as he served as Chairman of the Car Quality Commission, Chairman of the NHS Workforce Race Equality Standard Strategic Advisory Group, Adviser to the Health Authority of Abu Dhabi and Chairman of the Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital.
Building on the success of the 2015 conference, which was attended by over 250 professionals from the healthcare sector, the 2016 conference is moving to a larger venue to cater for more delegates, specifically from NHS Trusts. Lord Prior and senior hospital managers with clinical, finance and CEO perspectives will share their expertise and experience on a range of topics including patient safety, regulatory compliance, operational efficiency, transparency and focus on the real-life benefits of the adoption of GS1 standards.

The event will showcase the work of six selected demonstrator site acute Trusts, whose implementation of GS1 standards will be funded by the Department of Health. These will be announced in December 2015, and will demonstrate the true costs, challenges, resultant opportunities and benefits that arise from adopting the core enablers and primary use cases for GS1 standards.
John Warrington, Deputy Director of Procurement Policy & Research, Department of Health, said: “The implementation of GS1 standards is no longer a good thing to do. It’s essential for delivering the NHS Five Year Forward View efficiencies.” GS1 standards are increasingly being seen as vital in healthcare, as evidenced by Lord Carter’s independent review into productivity in the NHS, which states: “The introduction of GS1 standards will allow every NHS hospital in England to save on average up to £3 million each year while improving patient care.”
Headlined by Lord Prior, the 2016 GS1 UK Healthcare Conference will include keynote presentation from senior financial, procurement and IT directors from leading NHS England Trusts. Full details on the agenda and speakers will follow soon.
